Men's Basketball
Men’s basketball became immediately successful after its introduction at Virginia Tech. The first intercollegiate game, played in the Stone Auditorium (later Chapel and Library) on January 22, 1909, resulted in a 33-26 win over Emory and Henry College, and the team went on to finish the season with a 4-2 record. The following season, 1909-10, the team scored its only undefeated basketball campaign (11-0). The most wins in a season came in 1994-95 with a 25-10 record. The highest score came in a game with Southern Mississippi on February 6, 1988, which Virginia Tech won in two overtimes 141-133. The longest shot—89 feet, three inches—was made in 1980 by Les Henson, pushing the Hokies to a come-from-behind victory against Florida State. Known as the “Henson Heave,” the shot broke the existing world record for organized basketball of 86 feet. In 1988 Tech player Vernell “Bimbo” Coles became the university’s first student-athlete to play in the Olympics, which were held in Seoul, South Korea.
